What Have You Done For Me Lately?; A New Perspective

We live in a "me, me, me' society today. It's so easy to get caught up in only thinking about ourselves because of what we see on billboards, commercials and various advertisements. This concept bombards us from all directions. I've even seen t-shirts with the words, "It's all about me!" So it's no wonder we demand, "What have you done for me lately?". We have been conditioned to think only of "me" and therefore we tend to become demanding of the things we want. This leads to becoming dependant on others for our needs.

There are even times when people ask this questions of God himself. In our selfishness we fail to see beyond ourselves and our needs. "God, what have you done for me lately?" flows from our mouths far too often. We worry about everything and forget that God has promised to provide us what we need. (Philippians 4:19)

Jesus says in Matthew 6:31- 34, "Therefore do not worry, saying, "What shall we eat?" or "What shall we drink?" or "What shall we wear?" 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

God is the creator of all. Therefore He knows what we are going through, what we are thinking and how we are hurting. So He has given us the answer to our question. In essence He says, "Don't worry. Depend on Me not yourself or others." Everything that is was created by Him. (Genesis 1:1) Therefore, we are dependant on Him and He supplies what we need out of the riches of His glory. What man can do for us pales in comparison, doesn't it?

Now, let's look at this question with a new perspective.

God asks this question of us:

"What have you done for ME lately?" We have been given a command to go and spread the gospel; yet many who believe in Christ have made little or no effort in this area. This is so sad. Do you realize how great a gift you have? Would you not want others to partake in the love, joy and happiness that Christ gives? Oh, Christian, do not go through this life with little or no regard for the salvation of others!

Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works (which are the result of His Spirit in you) and glorify your Father in Heaven. (Matthew 5:16)

"Where do your treasures lie; in heaven or on earth?" Are you always wanting something better or new just for the sake that it's "better" or "new"? Let's not be covetous, wanting more, more, more! We are to be in the world but not just like it. And let's not be selfish with what we have. Our lives are not to be lived in dependance on ourselves nor on what we have. We are to live in dependance on God. Through Him we have our sustenance. Doing good for others in the name of Jesus lays up treasures in Heaven which no one can steal.

We are in dependence on Almighty God. He listens when we pray. He wants to talk to us through His Word. He cares that much for us. (1 Peter 5:7)

So what are you doing for HIM?
